After completing a B.Sc Hons. degree in Chemistry (1987) and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry (1990) at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (London), I held postdoctoral positions in the Department of Biochemistry and the Centre for Molecular Recognition at the University of Cambridge (1990-1993) and the Department of Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California – San Francisco (1994-1996). I joined the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Geneva in 1996 – first, as part of the Pharmaceutical Technology Unit before moving to the Medicinal Chemistry Unit in 2001 where I currently hold the position of Associate Professor and lead the Molecular Therapeutics Delivery Group. Since 2014, I have also been Director of the Graduate Programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences. My group’s research interests include: (i) Development of formulations to increase delivery of molecules into and across the skin , (ii) Investigation of the influence of physicochemical properties on electrically-assisted transport across the skin, (iii) Synthesis and characterization of prodrugs optimized for iontophoresis, (iv) Fractional laser ablation for the “needle-less” delivery of small molecules and biotechnology-derived therapeutics into and across the skin, (v) Investigation into the use of formulation and technology-based methods to improve buccal and ocular drug delivery, (vi) Development of a physiological model for drug permeation in the gastrointestinal tract in vitro. My research is funded by public grants and through industrial collaborations. I have published ~140 papers, 14 book chapters and presented ~190 conference communications. I serve on the Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery and Pharmaceutics and I am also a reviewer for more than fifty journals in the (bio)medical and pharmaceutical sciences.
