SkinVisc / ArthroVisc (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring linear polysaccharide, widely distributed in human tissues, where it constitutes the major part of the extracellular matrix. It is mostly found in epithelial, connective and neural tissues, and therefore plays important biological roles in tissue such as the skin and the articular cartilage As the major component of the synovial fluid, hyaluronic acid assumes an important role in the viscoelastic properties of the articular cartilage, improving absorption of shocks, as well as lubrication of the joints. Osteoarthritis is both characterized by a decrease in the concentration of hyaluronic acid and a reduction of its molecular weight, which may lead to an increase of pain and a loss of joint functions. Hyaluronic acid is also an important component of the skin, is a major contributor to the formation of a resilient gel-like ground substance that resists compressive forces. It contributes to tissues hydrodynamics by creating space for the movement of cells; it is believed to regulate the diffusion of micronutrients, metabolites and hormones between cells, and stimulates fibroblasts migration, proliferation and then collagen production.
