Objectives: In this study, we analyzed the per and postoperative complications and reviewed the techniques to avoid them.
Introduction: Tummy tucks are associated with relatively high morbidity and mortality, favored by known risk factors. Healing problems and seroma are the most common. Other complications can be potentially very serious: cutaneous necrosis, locoregional infection, hematoma and bleeding, thrombosis and pulmonary emboli, or intra-abdominal complication.
Materials / method: Risk factors: obesity, age, smoking, history of thromboembolic complications, history of abdominal surgery, are analyzed. Tricks and techniques to avoid complications and secure techniques are described. Our abdominoplasty technique is described in detail (liposuction, incision position, detachment, umbilical transposition, cutaneous resection and suture) with emphasis on improving the safety and the result.
Results: More invasive procedure (Body lifting, undermining, huge liposuction…), smoking and significant obesity are associated with a significant increase in the rate of complications. Risk of bleeding is increased in male patient. Some precautions should be taken with some invasive procedures. The closing of dead spaces reducing the risk of hematoma and seroma, the high tension points reducing tension on the wound margins, the careful coagulation and the undermining limited to the strict necessary are some of the essential elements to reduce the risks and improve results.
Conclusion: The abdominoplasty is always associated with a significant rate of complications. Obese patients who have undergone an invasive procedure have an increased risk of complications. Certain techniques and precautions greatly reduce the incidence of complications and improve the aesthetic result.
