The synergy between vacuum and electromagnetic fields in the treatment of stretch marks: a new effective and safe therapeutic approach
Objectives: This retrospective study analyses the effectiveness and safety of the synergy between electromagnetic fields and negative pressure in the treatment of white stretch marks on patients of all phototypes.
Introduction: The treatment of white stretch marks is still a complex challenge; often the results are not satisfactory, uniform and replicable for all patients, and are not free of side effects and limitations, as in the case of high skin phototype. In addition, to date, no therapy allows the restoration of the tanning ability of the stria, which become more evident considering that the adjacent healthy tissue pigments normally.
Materials / method: 74 female patients with white striae dated from six to thirty-five years, due to puberty, pregnancy, hormonal and cortisone therapies, have been treated with a medical device that combines electromagnetic fields and negative pressure. The treatment required nine sessions performed once or twice a week at my clinic. The results were evaluated with a VAS scale by the patients and doctors; with the assessment of any side effects and the level of patient comfort, and with biopsies taken on five patients with striae dated from ten to twenty years.
Results: All patients had a clear improvement. 85% of them were very or extremely satisfied with the results; stretch marks filled up and tanned after sun exposure. No side effects were observed, even with sun exposure after sessions. The therapies were pleasant, with a high level of comfort for the patients, and no down-time. Biopsies show multiplication of collagen and elastic fibers, reorganization of the basement membrane, and restoration of melanocytes.
Conclusion: The synergy between electromagnetic fields and negative pressure has proven its effectiveness and safety in treating white stretch marks, up to thirty-five years old. High effectiveness, absolute absence of side effects and down-time, pleasantness of the therapy, as well as existing literature make the synergy in question the therapy of choice for the treatment of stria. It can offer an objective and replicable response on all patients burdened by stretch marks regardless of their dating and location.
