Enhancing aesthetic practice safety by embracing a pilot's mindset
Objectives: Upon completion, participant will be able to...
(1) Gain a better appreciation for the parallels between aviation and aesthetic medicine, and the risks associated with human error
(2) Understand the benefits of applying safety tools from aviation such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and checklists to enhance practice safety
(3) Recognize the high likelihood for mistakes to occur and the need to establish safeguards and defenses to trap these errors and minimize their impact on patient safety
Introduction: There are many parallels that exist between the aviation and medical aesthetic industries, mainly the inherent risks associated with getting on an airplane or having a cosmetic procedure performed. Flying is now widely acknowledged as the safest form of travel, but the industry did not always enjoy such an enviable safety record. As an airline pilot with 22+ years of experience, I bring a unique perspective on safety and how the methods & tools utilized by pilots can be easily implemented into aesthetic practices. I will share the methodologies successfully incorporated into our practice.
Materials / method: Powerpoint based oral presentation
Results: Not applicable
Conclusion: The end goal of this presentation is to get aesthetic practitioners, practice owners and managers to embrace the safety first mindset that has enabled airline travel to become the safest mode of travel. With the inevitability of human error in processes and procedures (including aesthetic procedures), there is a need for more strategies to increase safety margins and reduce the unintended consequences of errors and complications on aesthetic patients. Thinking like a pilot will yield positive results and make aesthetic practices safer.
