Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the impact of poly-D,L-lactic acid on atrophic acne scars. Introduction: Atrophic acne scars are a common consequence of severe or untreated acne. acne scars represent an important factor of psychological discomfort in young and adult patients. There are different options that could help the patients, mostly based on laser treatments. In case of atrophic post-acne scars, the aesthetic outcome is not always satisfactory. Poly-lactic acid is a well-known collagen stimulator FDA-approved for the treatment of HIV-induced lipodystrophy and aesthetic age-related problems. It is often used as dermal filler to improve skin texture and volume Materials / method: A total of 12 patients participated in the study, receiving a series of three monthly injections of poly-D,L-lactic acid. Follow-up assessments were conducted three months after the final session. The aesthetic outcomes were evaluated both subjectively by the patients and by the investigators. The objective assessment involved utilizing a 3D photosystem to analyze the reduction in both the depth and width of the scars. Results: All patients successfully completed the study without any dropouts. Throughout the follow-up period, no significant side effects were observed. Both patients and investigators expressed high levels of satisfaction with the outcomes. Objective evaluations revealed a noteworthy reduction in both the depth and width of the scars. Conclusion: The utilization of PDLLA injections for treating atrophic acne scars appears to yield favourable aesthetic outcomes, validated by both patient and investigator assessments, as well as objective analysis through specialized software. This emerging approach presents a novel and promising option for our patients.
