Abstract

Objectives: Long thick and voluminous lashes add beauty to your eyes. It is considered to be of great aesthetic importance with ever increasing demand of Lash curling & lash extension procedures and a lot of cosmetics to enhance lash beauty. As Dermatologist we observe,these cosmetic procedures put the users under the risk of mechanical trauma,allergic reactions & infections. In this paper we will discuss how 0.03% topical Bimatoprost can naturally increase growth & thickness of lash with high safety for use around ophthalmic area & reduce the risks involved with other cosmetic procedures. Introduction: Loss of lashes can occur due to physical trauma &mechanical trauma ,chemical damage due to dyeing or perming.Use of make-up &lash extensions/artificial lash application also causes lash loss. Skin diseses like blepharitis/seb derm./alopecia areata/psoriasis/ lupus/trichotillomania, some dietrary deficiencies, thyroid deficiency &menopause also play a role. To get better and beautiful lashes, women seek help from various product. Minoxidil 2% can potentially grow lashes but it is very irritant to skin around eyes. So to study the efficacy & safety of 0.03% bimatoprost is discussed here. Materials / method: 45 females are included in the study aged between 25-45 years with no active dermatological disease around the lash area. They were not using any other pharmacological/ organic product known to cause lash growth. 0.03% topical Bimatoprost is used once daily with a clean sterile applicator along the upper lash line.A detailed video is shown how to apply the solution. before after pictures are taken at day 0, day 30,90 & 120 days. Results: 40 females completed the study. The treatment was well tolerated with no serious side effect. Mild eye irritation was experienced by 4 subjects. It was appreciated that all 40 females were happy & satisfied with the product. All 40 females had longer, fuller and thicker lashes after completion of 120 days.With comparison of pictures, it was observed that lashes were 80 percent fuller, 12 percent longer & darker. Females did not need any make-up mascara to enhance the lash beauty & they all declined any further artificial lash extension. They all wanted to continue the treatment for future. Conclusion: 0.03% Bimatoprost has promising results for fuller, thicker and longer lashes. It can come up as a popular treatment for lash aestetics. we need to guide the users properly to avoid any unnecessary hair growth around eyes due to spillage of drops. Over all it is a safe and effective treatment for all those who suffer from lash loss or thinning due to any dermatological/ medical condition or due to ageing or mechanical/chemical or physical damage.
