Objectives: OBJECTIVE
The presentation is based on the various medical indications of chemical peels. At the end, the listener will be aware of the different conditions where and how chemical peels can be utilized to optimise treatment outcomes
Introduction: The potential for use of chemical peels in medical conditions is underutilized. Recently, there is a resurgence in the interest in chemical peels because they are affordable, easy to perform have faster healing time, are patient friendly and cost-effective. In addition they can be customized to suit individual requirements.
Materials / method: Chemical peels can be used for various medical indications such as acanthosis nigricans, xanthelasma palpebrarum, lichen planus pigmentosus, primary cutaneous amyloidosis, frictional melanosis, resistant dermatophytosis, ichthyosis, keratosis pilaris, acne and papulonodular rosacea. They are used as adjuvant therapy to optimize treatment and achieve faster response.
Results: The most important use is in chemoprevention for prevention, inhibition and recurrence of skin cancer. Based on the principle of field cancerization, they are being increasingly applied to the entire surface such as the scalp as part of chemexfoliation. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is the commonest agent used for chemexfoliation. This procedure is also useful in xeroderma pigmentosum to prevent skin cancers.
Conclusion: Though there is a resurgence in the use of chemical peels, high quality evidence for the use of chemical peels in all these medical conditions is lacking and further large scale trials is the need of the hour.
