Objectives: Show different uses of Hyaluronic Acid in Genital Cosmetic Surgery.
Introduction: Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan found in the extracellular matrix and the bast majority of corporal tissues, that regulates different cellular processes, among them, water homeostasis and tissue regeneration/cicatrization. Hyaluronic acid has been safely used in plastic surgery for a long time to promote tissue hydration, correct scars, folds and tissue filling defects and improve skin aging.
Materials / method: In functional and regenerative gynecology HA is used to treat genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), lichen sclerosus and post-oncologic genital atrophy. In cosmetic gynecology HA is primarily used for labia majora augmentation, however, is used also in the correction of vulvar asymmetry, correction of episiotomy or any other genital surgery scars, and is often used to enhance vaginal laxity treatments with EBDs.
Results: Different HA reticulation allow us to choose the appropriate one for every treatment, being non-reticulated HA the one used to hydrate tissue (GSM, lychen, etc.) and highly reticulated HA the is used for labia majora augmentation. HA treatments in cosmetic gynecology are fast, reproducible and affordable, with few adverse effects that are usually self-limited. Hence, in trained hands HA allow us to obtain excellent cosmetic, functional and regenerative results highly satisfied patients.
Conclusion: Health regulations in some countries don´t allow us to find all commercial HA presentations that we might want for specific treatments, but as long as we continue to show the excellent results we get, patients demand these treatments and research show that is a safe treatment, we get closer to Health authorities to approve more laboratories and more HA presentations.
