Objectives: This lecture will illustrate ways in which social media can influence perceptions of beauty and how it affects cosmetic practices.
Introduction: Social media now permeates all aspects of life. The “selfie” phenomenon is becoming commonplace in ever younger demographics and influences on the individual and cultural perception of beauty are inevitable. The question is whether they are positive or negative, (or both).
Materials / method: Discussion about the positive and negative effects of social media, the effects that are being shown in increasingly younger cosmetic patients, and the emerging effects that will become more prominent in the next few years.
Results: N/A
Conclusion: Social media has shown to be a powerful influencer in changing perceptions of beauty and also in expectations of cosmetic practices. It has allowed for greater educational opportunities and fostered greater innovation through competition. However, it is creating psychological implications and unrealistic goals for a generation of young people. Of critical importance is the rapid increase in “influencers” who can be a force in the marketplace (and often without credentials). Social media influence will only grow in the future and planning for the impacts on cosmetic practices should begin now.
