Objectives: The objectives of this presentation is to examine the physician perspective of having HUDs for our patients.

Introduction: Home Use Devices (HUDs) have become commonplace around the globe for patients interested in doing home treatments in the aesthetic space either alone or as adjunctive therapy from health care providers. What was once felt that these devices would “hurt” physician visits and take away from potential income from medical personal has truly not been the case.

Materials / method: HUDs can be an entry way for patients to begin the rejuvenation or hair removal process for some, and many have used these products to compliment what we, as providers do, in our office settings.

Results: New and exciting HUDs are emerging into the global marketplace and we will review these and how they are changing the HUD landscape.

Objectives: This session will explore the evolving role of low-level light therapy (LLLT) and photobiomodulation in promoting hair growth, emphasizing mechanisms, efficacy, and integration into clinical practice. Special attention will be given to the interplay of light-based therapies with wound healing processes and potential to enhance follicular regeneration. Emerging home-based devices, which empower patients to manage hair loss, will also be discussed with emphasis on design, safety, and evidence-based outcomes.

Objectives: To raise the awareness of professional bodies and national regulators of possible non-compliance with the EU Medical Device Regulations (EU MDR) of some home-use devices being sold with potential safety risks to consumers.

Introduction: EU MDR Implementing Regulations were published in December 2022 and June 2023 regarding transitional provisions for certain products without an intended medical purpose. During this time there was a high influx of devices with minimal safety features. From the implementation date of transitional provisions, industry observers have noted the appearance in the market of new devices and/or significant changes in existing devices not permitted under regulations. The Transitional Provisions need to be enforced by the European Commission to ensure safety standards are maintained.

Materials / method: There is disparity between current published standards and the industry standard used by established European manufacturers. This includes the requirement for skin tone sensors and clinical safety and performance studies.

The industry standard also includes the Common Specifications requirement for ‘full skin contact’ versus ‘good contact with the skin’ in the current EN standard, where there is an increased risk of eye exposure from intense light flashing in free space.

Results: APPLiA, the Brussels-based trade association for European home appliance manufacturers, is concerned that these safety features are not standard in newly introduced devices as this is not required by legislation until the end of the transition period in 2028. Examples have been found of possible non-compliances.

Conclusion: Support is needed from national regulators to enforce EU MDR Transitional Provisions, and safety features should be explained to consumers. APPLiA has published a white paper to reach out to authorities and other professional bodies for support and to actively explain safety features to consumers.

Objectives: Several clinical studies of the photodynamic treatment of actinic keratosis and actinic cheilitis demonstrated that White LED photodynamic therapy(PDT) is a valuable alternative to conventional PDT performed with red light with better tolerability (almost painless) and lack of inferior efficacy. In addition, White LED illumination seems to present practical advantages in comparison with outdoor daylight PDT because the spectrum and light dose are fixed and reproducible and it is always feasible and programmable regardless of weather and environmental problems.
