Introduction: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) sources have become a standard in the cosmetic/aesthetic arena for treating a variety of skin care concerns.

Results: IPLs have the ability to treat vascular lesions, pigmentary concerns, and have demonstrated effects on collagen and elastin, something still, to this day, not seen with other energy-based devices (EBDs). Newer innovations to these EBDs include specific cut-off filters to treat vascular lesions more effectively as well as filters to selectively target acne vulgaris. In addition, in-motion treatments have become popular and are showing some very nice clinical effects on and off the face. These new concepts will be reviewed.

Conclusion: Long-term effects of using IPLs has also shown that the rejuvenating effects persist, and that with continued use, younger, healthier skin, can surely be achieved.

Objectives: To improve the safety and efficacy of picosecond laser treatment.

Introduction: The picosecond laser has been proved to be a good choice for some skin problems, such as pigmentary skin disorders. The photoacoustic effect is the predominant property of the picosecond laser. Based on the property of thermodynamics and Beer-Lambert law, we can know the temperature is linearly related to the amplitude of the photoacoustic effect.

Materials / method: We treat the skin lesions with a photothermal laser, such as long-pulsed alexandrite laser before the picosecond laser treatment. Besides, for better efficacy for some diseases, such as melasma with telangiectasia, combined therapy with pulsed dye laser is applied. Furthermore, to reduce the risk of laser-induced post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, we can use an attenuator to lower the output laser fluence with a stacking technique for safety and efficacy.

Results: Patients with cutaneous pigmentary disorders, such as lentigines, freckles, melasma, and post-acne erythema/ pigmentation, were safely treated with good therapeutic responses.

Conclusion: The efficacy of the picosecond laser can be safely enhanced with photothermal lasers.

Objectives: Fractional photothermolysis is characterized by the creation of microscopic zones of thermal damage with spatial separation between the columns of damaged tissue and the columns of untreated tissue. The depth of each column can be controlled by the pulse energy. With nonablative fractional resurfacing, a parallel column of heated, but not ablated tissue, extends down into the dermis.

Introduction: The same concept has been expanded into ablative fractional resurfacing by using the carbon dioxide wavelength of 10,600 nm. In comparison with the nonablative fractionated devices, the fractional ablative lasers heat tissue much more intensely, causing vaporization of tissue while significantly heating adjacent dermal collagen.

Results: A specially designed point-array compression tip for fractional non-ablative laser was been investigated. Point-array compression can enhance the clinical efficacy without further complications. Conclusion: Real time temperature controlled FRF is a highly reproducible, safe, effective nonsurgical treatment of face and neck rhytides and laxity and provides important insights into neocollagenesis, neoelastogenesis, and clinical outcomes.
Fractional RF devices are color blind and the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is lower than lasers especially in Asians.
