Objectives: Clinicians are faced with specific challenges when using peels on ethnic skin. Although darker skin confers the advantage of added photoprotection, it is the higher risk of postinflammatory dyschromias and abnormal scarring that makes peels potentially disfiguring. Clinicians should therefore have a sound knowledge of the various peels available and their strengths, limitations and safety in ethnic skin.
Introduction: In this era where lasers, lights and energy sources rule the therapeutic interventions, chemical peels still hold their place firmly as the most widely conducted procedure in our practice. They are affordable and effective way to rejuvenate the skin. Peels are generally meant to target acne, acne scars, pigmentary conditions, fine lines and photoageing. Today a number of peeling agents are available to us in a wide and bewildering cocktail of formulations.
Results: This presentation focuses on patient assesment, indications, Newer preparations and tnechniques of choosing chemical peels in ethnic skin which will lead to successful outcomes.
Conclusion: Standard and traditional peels have their advantages but are limited. The basic concept of how the peeling agents work at the tissue level has evolved. Complexities of formulations, molecular size, combinations, mechanism of action, compatibility issues for each peel demands consideration while choosing an appropriate peeling agent which would work best for an indication. However, newer ways of peeling are frequently emerging either as novel peeling agents, novel combinations of peels or varying strengths of peels.
