Introduction: Most startups fail. One critical component and predictor of success is the ability to raise external funding. Most startups never achieve that milestone. In healthcare, it is not optional to raise external funds because development, clinical and preclinical testing, FDA regulations costs are high and create a barrier to entry. Additionally, healthcare startups require more capital, take longer to return capital and require even more patient investors. Most investors shy away from healthcare investments. Accelerators and incubators can play a critical role in the success of healthcare startups.
Materials / method: We will introduce the topics of business acceleration and incubation in the healthcare space. The roles they play and examine the components that make an accelerator successful. We will take a look at all aspects of running a successful healthcare accelerator and how it can help de-risk a startup and be a great platform to make private investments.
Results: We will show that high-quality accelerators and incubators can play an important role in healthcare startup commercialization and be a lucrative investment opportunity for early-stage healthcare investors. We will also show some of the pitfalls of misalignment of incentives in some accelerator models and how entrepreneurs can take these learnings into account.
Conclusion: High quality and top-ranked healthcare accelerators have been successful in attracting some of the best early-stage startups, which in turn are successful in attracting capital. They can play an important role in diversifying an early stage investment portfolio, be a great entry point for health entrepreneurs and can be a positive influence on the startup ecosystem to encourage more tech commercialization.
