Objectives: Attendees will gain an understanding of the importance of niacinamide in skin wellness. Niacinamide affects a number of processes including pigmentation, inflammation, immune surveillance, keratinocyte differentiation, and barrier function. Scientific evidence will be presented to support its use in a complete skin care regimen.

Introduction: Niacinamide, is the water soluble form of nicotinic acid and one of the three primary forms of vitamin B3. Because it readily penetrates the stratum corneum and is the most efficacious form of vitamin B3, niacinamide is found in many cosmeceuticals and skin care products. The presentation will focus on the science of vitamin B3, and the role of niacinamide in maintaining a healthy skin barrier, its role in immunomodulation, and its effects on pigmentation. How to incorporate niacinamide into a skin care regimen will also be discussed.

Objectives: Understand the use of retinoids in dermatology.
Learn about a novel micro encapsulation technology-calcium hydroxyapatite hydroxysomes for retinaldehyde stability, delivery and efficacy.

Introduction: Retinoic acid is a cornerstone of dermatology therapy for the treatment of acne, signs of skin aging, discoloration and pore size. Irritation limits its practical use. A study of a novel encapsulated retinal was performed to ascertain stability of the molecule, performance and reduction in scaliness and dryness compared to Adapaline, a third generation retinoid.

Materials / method: Female subjects of mixed ethnicities used calcium hydroxyapatite encapsulated retinaldehyde .075%, daily for 8 weeks. Efficacy was measured and skin replica analysis was performed.
Female subjects then used calcium hydroxyapatite encapsulated retinaldehyde .075% compared to Adapaline .1% for a 12 week study. Efficacy and side effects were measured.

Results: 8 weeks study revealed visible overall improvement in firmness, fine lines, wrinkles, and dyschromia. Skin replica analysis showed 25% reduction in crows feet.
12 week study of encapsulated Retinal vs. Adapaline showed similar statistically significant anti aging efficacy yet the Retinal was more tolerable with 75% of Adapaline users experiencing scaling and 65% experiencing dryness.

Conclusion: Hydroxysomes, made of calcium hydroxyapatite act as a micro carrier of retinaldehyde. This novel encapsulation stabilizes retinal, allows slow extended release for better bioavailability and attenuating irritation. Calcium also strengthens the skin barrier. Anti aging results were comparable to Adapaline without the irritation and increased compliance.

Discuss the selection of ingredients, vehicles, formulas and regimens to heal and prevent skin conditions.

Introduction: Skin problems by definition are complicated with multifactorial causality. There is no singular ingredient or formula that accomplishes healing and prevention. Treating skin with a regimen including the right cleanser, toner, treatment, moisture repair and sun protection for that condition can give visible results and compliance with the protocol.

Materials / method: 4 step brightening regimen including vitamin C, niacinamide, alpha hydroxy acids and a retinoid for 8 weeks.

Results: Visible skin brightening with ongoing compliance for sustained benefit.

Conclusion: A multi-med approach is effective in the treatment of common skin conditions. Efficacy is maximized when using the right ingredients in the right vehicles- cleanser, toner, treatment, moisture repair and UV/IR protection.
