Objectives: The concept of performing laser or pulsed light therapies on patients who are taking isotretinoin has been a controversial subject for many years. The consensus amongst many is that these procedures can be safely performed in many instances on patients who are taking isotretinoin. This presentation will review the most up-to-date research into this subject matter and review some of the more pertinent publications in this field.
Introduction: The use of lasers and light sources is very common in our daily practices. The use of isotretinoin is also very common for those with recalcitrant, cystic acne. Can you safely perform laser and light procedures on patients who are concurrently taking isotretinoin? It has been a controversial subject which today has more clarity. This presentation will attempt to show how the literature supports that one can use lasers and light sources in most instances in patients who are taking isotretinoin.
Materials / method: Through a literature review, the current recommendations for the use of lasers and light sources in those patients who are and who have taken isotretinoin will be presented. In addition, a recent publication showing the use of low dose isotretinoin in patients who received short-pulsed 1064 nm laser therapy for severe acne vulgaris will be presented.
Results: In the clinical presentation of those in the clinical study, safety and efficacy and improved quality of life were demonstrated. The results of the recommendations for today's use of lasers and light sources will also be presented.
Conclusion: The use of most lasers and light sources, in conjunction with isotretinoin, can be successfully performed. Understanding how best to combine these modalities is critical, but studies show that this can be safely performed.
