Objectives: 1. Explore a new treatment protocol
2. Learn how to practically treat patients with facial photoaging who deserve more than a simple photorejuvenation but are not willing to accept a long downtime procedure
3. Understand how 2 different technologies can be synergistic if used sequentially
Introduction: The constant research to obtain an aesthetic improvement of the face with a rapid recovery and a minimum risk is at the basis of a new treatment protocol. Efficacy and safety of a new sequential (same session) use of IPL and microneedle radiofrequency and galvanic energy for facial rejuvenation have been evaluated.
Materials / method: 212 patients with mild to moderate facial solar elastosis have been enrolled since 2018. The new therapeutic protocol consists of 4 treatment sessions at 30-40 days interval. A full face OPT - IPL photorejuvenation procedure is immediatelly followed by a 3 pass hybrid energy MRF procedure The degree of photoaging and the efficacy of treatment were evaluated using a modified Dover's scale (5 point scale for global score, fine lines, mottled pigmentation, sallow complexion, tactile roughness and coarse wrinkles). The follow-up was at 6 months after the end of the last treatment session.
Results: All the variables of the modified Dover’s scale showed a statistically significant improvement in the majority (> 75%) of patients and only minor adverse events have been recorded.
Conclusion: It is hypothesized that the observed improvement could be attributed to the synergistic effect of the 2 technologies used sequentially. The IPL treatment, by increasing the tissue temperature and increasing the water content of tissues, could allow a greater and deeper diffusion of the radiofrequency explaining, consequently, the results that can be observed on collagen production
