Objectives: To assess the current evidence base for injectables in gender-affirming care and identify unmet needs.
Introduction: Although visibility of LGBTQIA+ individuals continues to rise, including 1.6% of adults (over 4 million) in the USA who are transgender and/or nonbinary, they remain an understudied and underserved population who experience significant physical and mental health disparities, Gender dysphoria is particularly associated with suboptimal healthcare, social exclusion, lower quality of life, and higher incidence of co-morbidities as well as higher mortality in every age group. Gender-affirming care has been demonstrated to improve quality of life and psychological well-being.
Materials / method: As demand for gender-affirming care becomes more visible, there is growing recognition of the role of minimally invasive procedures including injectables. To date, peer-reviewed publications have focused on anecdotal techniques and results, as may happen in any emerging field.
This work presents a needs assessment for injectables in gender-affirming care.
Results: Treatments with injectable fillers and neuromodulators represent unique and important components of gender-affirming care with the benefits of being minimally invasive, and favorable safety profiles when performed appropriately. Identified and analyzed unmet needs will be presented.
Conclusion: The rationale of supporting medically appropriate, evidence-based practice that reflects cultural awareness, knowledge, sensitivity and competence enables this work to be extrapolated to other minimally invasive aesthetic procedures.
