Treating facial and scalp hyperhidrosis with RF microneedling
Objectives: To understand the frequency of facial and scalp hyperhidrosis
To understand the pathophysiology of facial and scalp hyperhidrosis
To discuss science and results of RFM treatment for hyperhidrosis
Introduction: Facial and scalp hyperhidrosis is a debilitating condition with very few treatment options. There has been success using RFM for axillary hyperhidrosis. It would make sense to apply RFM to treat facial and scalp hyperhidrosis.
Materials / method: Patients were examined with ultrasound to determine skin thickness in areas of treatment. Depths of RFM were chosen to be at or slightly below level of dermal/sub q junction. Patients were treated with energy levels to destroy the eccrine and apocrine glands. 2 treatments at least were performed.
Results: Patient satisfaction was high. Approximately 40% improvement with one treatment and 60% improvement with 2 treatments. Results lasted at least a year in most cases.
Conclusion: Facial and scalp hyperhidrosis can be treated successfully with RFM. Ultrasound is a good adjunct to determine best depths. Patient satisfaction is high and results are long lasting.
