Thread lifting of the midface: a multicenter, observational, prospective study for objective outcome evaluation in the midface
Objectives: to chose the best thread insertion pattern to treat facial tissue ptosis
to restore midfacial volume in order to rejuvenate the face
to provide long lasting results as shown by the recorded data
Introduction: the facial aging process produces changes that are characteristic of the superficial and deep fat framework and skin layers. Subdermal suspension with threads enables the sagging tissues to be lifted by means of a minimally invasive, closed procedure without surgical dissection.
This observational study has been carried out based on standardized tridimensional photographic analysis and measurement, aimed at determining objective, repetitive, and reliable evaluation of the soft tissue suspension technique.
Materials / method: fourteen participants were enrolled in this study presenting with mild to moderate ptosis of the midface tissues. Patient photographs were taken before (t0), after threads implantation (t1), and at the following visit (t2). Each image captured in stereophotogrammetry before thread insertion was registered by software and volumetric changes along with surface linear lengths in between the reference points were calculated
Results: the result showed an overall average midface volume restoration after thread suspension (t0-t1) and its reliability up to the end of the follow up (t0-t2). All analyzed parameters improved significantly (P < 0.05) at t1 and at t2 with respect to t0.
Conclusion: this study suggest that facial tissue suspension by means of poli-lactic/poli-caprolactone threads to treat mild to moderate ptosis of the midface is safe and effective, as it is possible to achieve reliable volume restoration and tissue repositioning up to one year to treat skin flaws that affect the midface area in early stages of ageing or before to address further facial surgery.
