Melon derived super oxide dismutase oral nutraceutical for treatment of genetic and acquired skin pigmentary disorders
Objectives: Evaluate use of melon derived superoxide dismutase (SOD) oral nutraceutical combined with recognized treatments for vitiligo, melasma, and acquired skin pigmentation.
Introduction: Skin pigmentation disorders are difficult to manage, and standard treatments have limited efficacy. Vitiligo and Melasma are especially challenging disorders to treat, as well as non-genetic skin pigmentation issues. This presentation will review the use of a melon derived SOD oral nutraceutical for genetic and acquired pigmentary disorders.
Materials / method: Vitiligo: Prospective study (n=50) compared NB-UVB for 24 weeks or combined with SOD nutraceutical (500mg/day) and evaluated with Vitiligo Extent Scores. Melasma: Prospective study (n=47) compared triple cream (hydroquinone 2%, Tretinoin 0.05%, Fluocinoloneacetonide 0.01%) alone for 3 months, or combined with Beta-carotene (25,000 or 50,000 IU/day), or SOD nutraceutical (250mg or 500mg/day), evaluated with Melasma Area Severity Index. Conclusion: This melon derived SOD oral nutraceutical makes NB-UVB treatment significantly more effective at improving re-pigmentation in vitiligo. It also significantly improves the effectiveness of topical therapy for melasma and is better than combination with standard dietary anti-oxidants. Additionally, the SOD nutraceutical alone significantly reduces pigmentation in non-genetic skin hyperpigmentation. Oral use of this SOD nutraceutical provides a powerful tool to treat both genetic and non-genetic pigmentation disorders.
