The efficacy of PRP injections on the healing of thyroidectomy wound: A randomized single-blind prospective study
Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of PRP on the wound healing of thyroidectomy wound
Introduction: Conventional thyroidectomy causes an obvious scar at neck. The appearance of neck scarring can be disturbing both physically and psychologically. There are many options for reduction and prevent scar formation. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has the potential to stimulate and accelerate wound healing process. The cytokines and growth factors released from PRP can play a crucial role in the healing process. However, the use of PRP has not been extensively studied yet in thyroidectomy scars.
Materials / method: A prospective, randomized, controlled trial was performed at Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck surgery, Ramathibodi hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. 11 patients who met the inclusion criteria that were undergoing thyroidectomy were enrolled. Before closing the skin incision after thyroidectomy was done, the surgical incision sites were divided in midline. One half of the wound was injected with PRP subcutaneously while another side was not injected. Post-operative wound healing was monitored at 1 week 4 months and 6 months
Results: A side of wound injected with PRP showed significantly better healing than the wound side without PRP injection at 6 months post operation, based on VSS (VSS score of -3.09, p value = 0.001, 95% confidence interval -4.76 to -1.42), observer-based POSAS scale (-11.45, p value < 0.001, 95% confidence interval -17.03 to -5.87) and patient-based POSAS scale. (-8.27, P value= 0.03, 95% confidence interval -15.82 to -0.71)
Conclusion: In this study, PRP injection can significantly improve healing of thyroidectomy wound in patients prone to have scar.
