Laser and Energy-Based Devices in Gynecology and Dermatology
Objectives: To highlight the role of laser therapy in hidradenitis suppurativa.
To describe the combined use of diode 1940 nm and hybrid CO₂/Er:GaAs lasers.
To share clinical outcomes, safety considerations, and treatment protocols.
Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory disease of the apocrine glands that severely impacts patients’ quality of life. Conventional treatments, including long-term antibiotics, biologic therapy, and surgical excision, often show limited efficacy or are associated with significant side effects and high recurrence rates.
In recent years, laser-based technologies have emerged as promising alternatives due to their dual ability to reduce bacterial load and chronic inflammation while promoting tissue remodeling. The diode laser at 1940 nm offers deep dermal coagulation
Materials / method: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with high recurrence and limited efficacy of conventional therapies. Laser technologies offer minimally invasive alternatives. The 1940 nm diode laser provides deep dermal coagulation and reduces inflammation, while the CO₂–Er.GaAs hybrid laser improves skin quality and treats residual scarring. Their combined use represents an innovative approach to enhance clinical outcomes and quality of life in HS patients.
Results: Ten patients with HS received one 1940 nm diode laser session and three CO₂–Er.GaAs hybrid sessions at 4-week intervals, with 6-month follow-up. Significant reduction in inflammatory nodules, drainage, and pain was achieved after the diode treatment. The hybrid laser improved skin texture and reduced pathologic scarring. No major adverse events were observed, procedures were well tolerated, and patients reported high satisfaction and better quality of life.
Conclusion: The combined use of 1940 nm diode laser and CO₂–Er.GaAs hybrid laser represents a safe and effective minimally invasive strategy for hidradenitis suppurativa. The diode laser provided control of active inflammation, while the hybrid laser improved skin quality and pathologic scarring. This protocol reduced recurrence, enhanced patient comfort, and improved quality of life, supporting its role as a promising therapeutic option.
