Microbiome Medicine: A New Era for Psoriasis, Acne, and Dermatitis
Objectives: To assess the therapeutic potential of microbiome-based products (MBPs) in inflammatory skin diseases, highlighting how probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and live biotherapeutics restore balance, modulate immunity, and complement conventional care
Introduction: Skin dysbiosis is linked to acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, and rosacea. Unlike traditional therapies, MBPs target the skin–microbiome and gut–skin axis, offering precise modulation of microbial ecosystems and new therapeutic possibilities.
Materials / method: A review of metagenomic studies, preclinical models, and clinical trials of topical and oral MBPs was conducted, evaluating their effects on microbial diversity, immune modulation, efficacy, safety, and regulatory considerations.
Results: MBPs improve microbial diversity, barrier integrity, and inflammation. Trials show benefits in atopic dermatitis and acne, with early promise in psoriasis and rosacea. They are generally safe, though regulatory frameworks remain incomplete.
Conclusion: MBPs are an emerging strategy for skin diseases, showing efficacy in restoring microbial homeostasis and reducing symptoms. Standardization, long-term safety studies, and regulatory clarity are essential to fully integrate microbiome medicine into dermatology.
