Scarless mastopexy using absorbable barbed threads: a minimally invasive solution for breast ptosis
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of barbed absorbable threads as a minimally invasive alternative for breast lift in selected patients with mild to moderate ptosis.
Introduction: Breast ptosis remains a common aesthetic concern. While mastopexy is effective, it involves scars, downtime, and surgical risks. Barbed threads provide a scarless, outpatient solution with immediate lift and tissue support.
Materials / method: A prospective series of 48 patients with mild–moderate breast ptosis underwent barbed PDO thread placement in fan-shaped vectors for suspension and contouring. Outcomes were assessed using standardized photographs, GAIS, and patient-reported satisfaction at 1, 6, and 12 months. Safety was monitored through complication recording.
Results: Patients reported visible lift and contour improvement immediately post-procedure. At 12 months, majority maintained aesthetic benefit with high GAIS scores and satisfaction. Minor side effects (bruising, asymmetry) were temporary and self-limiting.
Conclusion: Barbed thread breast lift is a safe, minimally invasive approach that achieves scarless rejuvenation and improved contour in carefully selected cases, offering an appealing alternative to surgical mastopexy.
