Next generation skincare with adaptogens
Objectives: To educate attendees on the science and application of plant adaptogens in skincare, including their historical use, mechanisms of action, current incorporation in topical formulations, and clinical data supporting their efficacy.
Introduction: Adaptogens are a class of natural substances, primarily plant-based compounds, known to help the body resist stressors and restore physiological balance. Historically adaptogens were consumed to improve resilience, stamina, and immune function.
In recent years, the concept of “skin stress” (from environmental pollutants, UV exposure, and oxidative stress) has shifted the conversation around adaptogens into the realm of topical skincare. Their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and barrier-supportive properties have made them appealing ingredients in skincare products.
Materials / method: Several in vitro, ex vivo, and clinical studies have evaluated the benefits of adaptogenic ingredients in skincare which will be shared.
Conclusion: Adaptogens represent a promising frontier in skincare, offering biologically active compounds that support the skin’s ability to adapt, defend, and recover from stress. As consumer demand grows for plant-powered, stress-resilient skincare, understanding the science behind adaptogens will be key for dermatologists, formulators, and skincare professionals aiming to integrate nature and efficacy into their recommendations.
