Dr Javier Beut is an Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon based in Mallorca, Spain. He specializes in oculoplastic and rhinoplastic reconstructive procedures. He is an international speaker and has been involved in Humanitarian Surgical Collaboration since he was a resident. Dr Beut is based in Mallorca, Spain.

IMCAS Academy spoke to Dr Beut about his experience in this field.

1. You are a facial plastic surgeon, specializing in rhinoplasty and oculoplastic surgery – what led you to specialize in this field?

My plastic surgery training was based in microsurgery, brachial plexus and limb replantation. This was a unique education that allowed me to have a general understanding of general plastic surgery.

But it was my relationship with the developing world after that focused my mind to this kind of surgery. Since my residency in 1989, and afterwards during vacations and more recently with my foundation, I have spent time in Kenya and Tanzania, doing facial, cleft lip and nose repairs.

2. What qualities do you need to be successful in this field?

You need a clear understanding of anatomy and a background in reconstructive surgery. Not only of this specific area, but in general, for when you are taking grafts from other parts of the body.

You also need to be patient, study the field deeply and be self-critical.

3. What trends have you noticed in your work over the last few years? What trends do you predict for the future, or would you like to see?

Ancillaries procedures like canthal support and volumization are a must today when patients are looking for facial expression - the eyelids and cheeks are interrelated.

Regarding rhinoplasty, I think an “open approach” is trending. My humble opinion is that the closed nose should be taught again. The problems need to be visualized and analyzed before hand. Young residents and specialists, unfortunately start with the open approach with no other training.

Plus I think patients are more and more strict and demanding. They are not looking for rhinoplasty to “remove humps” or blepharoplasty to “eliminate fat” – they are looking for proportion, balance and expression.

4. What is the most rewarding part of your job, and what are the challenges?

Education. I love to teach. I started my foundation, and began writing manuals and being a visiting professor at universities, such as Stanford University. I organize a symposium and an Academy for Continuing Professional Education in Applied Facial Anatomy.

In recent years, I have been creating new 3D interactive tools for education, to give a new way of teaching.

5. How long have you been attending IMCAS congresses? What do you find most rewarding about attending and speaking at IMCAS congresses?

I have been at the IMCAS congresses since the beginning. IMCAS has changed mentalities, by putting together different mentalities with the same goal. It is also the starting point for the year.

Dr Beut will be a speaker at IMCAS World Congress 2018, focusing on eyelid surgery.
