Objectives: Understand the science of cosmeceuticals and their impact on skin health. Identify key active compounds and their mechanisms. Learn to evaluate clinical evidence for efficacy. Apply knowledge to create effective skincare regimens for diverse skin types. Introduction: Cosmeceuticals represent a rapidly evolving category of skincare products that bridge the gap between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, delivering both aesthetic and therapeutic benefits. This lecture explores the science behind cosmeceuticals, focusing on how biologically active compounds interact with skin at a cellular level to address concerns such as ageing, pigmentation, sun damage, and loss of elasticity. Materials / method: Review of peer-reviewed studies on cosmeceutical compounds. Analysis of active ingredients’ mechanisms via cellular and molecular models. Case studies from clinical practice demonstrate the practical applications of this approach across various skin types. Results: Active compounds enhance cellular turnover, barrier function, and antioxidant defence. Clinically validated cosmeceuticals improve skin texture, reduce pigmentation, and mitigate ageing signs, with tailored efficacy across diverse skin types. Conclusion: Cosmeceuticals offer significant benefits for skin health when backed by science. Understanding their mechanisms and evidence allows practitioners to optimize treatments, enhancing patient outcomes in aesthetic dermatology.
