Objectives: Understanding the physical impact of breast weight
Introduction: Over the past years, breast operations using implant is the number one operative procedure in aesthetic surgery. Even in reconstructive breast surgery, implant reconstruction has widely replaced autologous tissue reconstruction, with an unbearable high number of complications.
While in aesthetic breast augmentation patient´s satisfaction rate is high, long term effects show up as ptosis and breast tissue atrophy.
Hooke´s law of elasticity states that, for relatively small deformations of an object, the displacement or size of the deformation is directly proportional to the deforming force or
Materials / method: Lightweight implants may have the potential to address these side-effects of heavy weight breast implants, which demonstrate equivalence between their weight and size. A new breast implant design allows for a reduction in implant weight of up to 30%, while maintaining the size, form and function of traditional breast implants.
Results: In our series over 60 breast augmentations in the last year, we could proof that lighter implants significantly reduce the inherent strains imposed by standard implants,
Conclusion: In conclusion lightweight breast implants reduce breast tissue alteration and deformation; further improving patient´s safety and satisfaction, either in aesthetic as also in reconstructive breast surgery.
