Objectives: Next generation IPL systems are ideal tools to address very specific dermatological needs eliminating unnecessary thermally related collateral tissue damage.
Introduction: IPL systems have gone a long way since their introduction in 1991. The original multi-wave spectral band tissue interaction, unique to IPL technologies, is at the base of their great versatility in dermatological treatments. Many technical improvements have progressively led to more compact, ergonomically effective platforms and safer, broader clinical applications.
Materials / method: Today activation of pre-selected effective spectral bands is extremely easy, allowing operators to focus IPL photo-thermal effects on highly specific dermatological targets virtually eliminating unnecessary thermally related collateral tissue damage. The adoption of highly efficient water filters can stop near IR radiations previously responsible for uncontrolled temperature increase within treated tissues.
Results: Next generation IPL systems are ideal tools to rejuvenate aging skin, being able to simultaneously interact with vascular, pigmentary, and textural cutaneous alterations. Non-invasive IPL photo-thermal treatments can be effectively combined with other already established dermatologic procedures such as chemical peels and ablative/non ablative fractional laser skin retexturing.
Conclusion: Next generation IPL can also be used to activate PpIX in PDT -assisted rejuvenation procedures providing temporally confined photo-activation of fluorescent targets.
