Objectives: To review Lasers CO2 and Erbium Yag, lasers tissue interaction, delivery systems and their clinical applications relevant to vulvo-vaginal area.
Comparison between the two lasers concerning their indications, their results and their side effects and complications
Introduction: Aesthetic and regenerative gynecology is a relatively new and growing subspecialty of gynecology.
Its objective is to improve the appearance and restore the function of the vulvo-vaginal region which may have been damaged during pregnancy, childbirth, or during tissue changes induced by aging and menopause.
The use of minimally invasive energy treatments as well as other methods which may be medical or surgical are used to achieve the dual goals of satisfactory function and appearance.
Among EBD for vaginal procedures , CO2 and Erbium Yag lasers are the most widely used applications.
Materials / method: An exhaustive review of the literature on the CO2 laser and the Erbium Yag Laser, as well as a personal experience are described and make it possible to establish a comparison between the 2 Lasers in their female genital applications.
Results: C02 and Erbium Yag lasers applied to the female genital area seem to improve functional signs as well as genital restoration.
Depending on the indication, the results are variable, and the CO2 Laser seems to prevail in certain indications, just like the Erbium Yag Laser offers better results in others.
But in the end, there would not be a big difference in the results between the two lasers just like for the side effects and the complications which seem very rare for the two devices.
Conclusion: New energy-based technologies such as CO2 and Erbium Yag lasers make it possible to treat certain pathologies of the female genital area in a non-invasive way.
CO2 and Erbium Yag Lasers seem to be equivalent in terms of their protocols, their results, their short and long-term effects and the virtual absence of side effects or complications.
However, other studies and randomized trials of greater magnitude and long term must confirm these very good results of lasers in the female genital area.
