It’s our pleasure to have Dr Diala Haykal here today to chat about the digital era and its impact on our beauty standard and industry practice.

Dr Haykal is an American Board-Certified doctor specializing in aesthetic medicine and laser.

Q: What’s your view on TikTok influence on the industry?
A: It is important because TikTok has a huge impact in the world’s daily lives. Currently, young generations are considered digital natives and they are immersed in online learning. Therefore, they are well informed. TikTok is relatively new social media, it has gained incredible popularity, and it’s the world’s fastest growing social media platform to reach 1.5 Billion monthly active users. The relationship between social media, dermatology, aesthetics and skincare grows more important. We could even talk about their rebirth in this digital Era!

Through TikTok, people can be informed in positive and negative ways. Physicians should be aware of this trend in order to provide appropriate counseling, improve communication, disseminate evidence-based counsel, and combat misinformation. Their presence on social media applications should be encouraged to dispel and counteract misleading posts.

I believe in positively influencing healthcare through social media by employing social media as an educational tool, developing best practices of social media use in health care through evidence-based methods, advocating for the preservation of integrity of online medical information, and inspiring others to use social media as a vital tool in healthcare.

Q: How can we utilize TikTok
A: Here are some topics that can be presented on TikTok: Educational videos on skin related topics, tips on skincare, clinical demonstrations, live procedures, messages on awareness and prevention.

Make sure that you are present for your audience, and keep in contact with your patients’ concerns. My secret essential three ingredients to have a successful communication are: Being Confident, Being Compelling, and Being connected. I call them the 3C!

Q: How does medical association help physicians in social media use?
A: In the US, there is the AHSM (Association for Healthcare Social Media) promoted by the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) that provides educational resources for social media use in health and advocates for the recognition of social media as an important public health tool in combating misinformation.
