Objectives: The presented study aims to evaluate the impact of minimally invasive facial aesthetic procedures (fillers and BoNT-A) in the quality of life of transgender men and women aiming to express the gender identity chosen by them. This poster presents this ongoing study and results obtained in pilot assessments by the author.
Introduction: In the United States, approximately 1.5 million people identify as transgender1, which is an individual whose gender identity does not conform to their biologic sex. Aesthetic modification of the transgender patient has historically been performed by non-dermatologists via costly, invasive, and permanent procedures. However, minimally invasive dermatologic procedures may yield excellent outcomes for transitioning patients, who may prefer temporary and reversible treatments over surgical methods while transitioning.2-4
Materials / method: Open label, unicenterand prospective study. Approved by the Ethic Committee of Pará State University –Health and Biologic Sciences Center, number 58177222.6.0000.5174. Twenty patients (10 transgender men and 10 transgender women) on hormonal treatment for at least 2 years, having never had permanent fillers treatment and no temporary injectable treatments in the previous year are planned to be included in the study. The procedures will be performed at day 1 by the same investigator to minimize technique bias. Treatment technique is described in Figures 1 and 2.
Results: The present study is ongoingand no interim analysis has been performed. However, in a pilot assessment performed by the author in his clinical setting, improvement of patients’ quality of life was observed. Results presented below correspond to the assessment of quality of life of four patients, performed with the Portuguese versions of questionnaires SF-36 and WHOQOL-BREF. The average results of are displayed in Figures 3 and 4. Physical, psychological and social domains of WHOQoL-BREF presented higher scores after treatment than baseline. SF-36 also presented better scores after treatment.
Conclusion: The positive results observed in patients’ quality of life, from the pilot assessments performed by the author, led to the development of the study with 20 patients. The enhancement of the desired gender features is an important part of the gender transition process. With the results of this studywe expect that more transgender patients can be treated with the suitable technique to obtain safe and efficient results.
