Lipedema Definition Technique: The Future of Lipedema Surgery
Objectives: This study evaluated the outcomes of the lipedema
definition technique (LDT) for the treatment of lipedema, focusing on clinical
efficacy, quality of life improvement, and patient satisfaction.
Introduction: This study evaluated the outcomes of the lipedema
definition technique (LDT) for the treatment of lipedema, focusing on clinical
efficacy, quality of life improvement, and patient satisfaction.
Materials / method: Study Population
This retrospective study was conducted from February 9, 2023, to August 20,
2024, and was approved by the local research ethics committee (no.
6.479.834). Study assessments were conducted preoperatively, 90 days after
surgery, and completed 2 years later.
The medical records of the sample were analyzed, considering women aged
between 18 and 65 years who had undergone LDT within the past 2 years,
achieved measurable results, and agreed to participate in this study; those
who did not provide consent were excluded. Thus, the study included 67
women with a mean age of 40 years.
Results: A high satisfaction rate (91.5%) was reported, highlighting positive aspects,
such as fast recovery and healing, improved skin appearance, better muscle
definition, lighter legs, reduced volume, pain, fatigue, varicose veins, and
cellulite. However, pain, postoperative sensitivity, skin laxity, recovery
period, marks, high cost, and the need to wear compression garments were
mentioned as negative aspects. About 61.7% of patients required
complementary treatment.
Conclusion: Lipedema definition technique was a safe and effective surgical technique for
treating lipedema, particularly in moderate to advanced cases. Findings
demonstrated significant improvements in weight, BMI, BFP, and percentage
of obesity, as well as a reduction in pain and impact of lipedema on the
quality of life of patients.
In addition, the high satisfaction levels among patients and the sustained
results over time emphasize the relevance of LDT as a clinical intervention.
This technique reduced symptoms and also restored the self-esteem and
functionality of patients.
