Rhinoplasty with Rib Cartilage: Strategies for Managing Difficult and Revision Cases
Objectives: The purpose of this communication is to discuss current concepts and surgical techniques in rhinoplasty, with particular focus on functional and aesthetic outcomes. It aims to address the indications for different grafting materials, including the use of rib cartilage in complex or revision cases, and to emphasize strategies that ensure long-term structural stability and natural results
Introduction: Rib cartilage is used in rhinoplasty when a strong and reliable graft material is needed, especially in complex or revision cases. It is indicated when septal cartilage is insufficient or has already been harvested, and when ear cartilage does not provide enough strength or volume.
Materials / method: Rib cartilage offers abundant material that can be carved into structural grafts to support the nasal tip, dorsum, or to correct severe deformities such as saddle nose or post-traumatic collapse. Although harvesting requires an additional incision and carries a small risk of warping, rib cartilage remains one of thehe most versatile and durable options for achieving stable, long-term results in rhinoplasty.
Results: In this session, I,m going to present several rhinoplasty cases, including primary post-trauma ones, and cases of severly deviated noses
Conclusion: Even though the use of rib cartilage in rhinoplasty can be technically demanding and carries certain challenges, it remains one of the most reliable and versatile options for complex and revision cases. Its strength, availability, and long-term stability make it an essential tool for achieving both functional and aesthetic success
