Objectives: review strategies for using smooth implants in breast augmentation and reconstruction . Introduction: Smooth implants may be more prone to inferior and lateral malposition following breast augmentation when compared to textured surface implants Materials / method: Review the normal breast anatomy and factors that may predispose to implant malposition Review strategies for using smooth surface implants to minimize the incidence of malposition Results: Various strategies have demonstrated success to prevent malposition using different mesh products or by maximal preservation of the normal supportive breast anatomy Conclusion: Implant malposition can be minimized in the setting of breast augmentation and augmentation mastopexy when smooth implants are used.
