Psychological Consultation in aesthetic and cosmetic dermatology
Objectives: To highlight the importance of incorporating psychological assessment and support into aesthetic dermatologic practice to promote safe, ethical, and patient-centered care.
Introduction: Psychological consultation is increasingly recognized as an integral component of aesthetic and cosmetic dermatology. Patients’ motivations, expectations, and emotional well-being play a significant role in determining treatment satisfaction and overall outcomes.
Materials / method: This presentation synthesize current knowledge on the psychological dimensions of aesthetic procedures, emphasizing pre-procedure evaluations, empathic communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration with mental health professionals.
Results: Psychological consultation assists in identifying patients with body image disturbances, unrealistic expectations, or psychiatric conditions such as body dysmorphic disorder, depression, and anxiety. Structured psychological evaluation and communication strategies improve patient selection, enhance satisfaction, and minimize post-procedural regret or dissatisfaction.
Conclusion: Integrating psychological consultation within aesthetic dermatology enhances both clinical and psychological outcomes. Understanding psychosocial motivations such as self-esteem improvement, social influences, or coping with aging enables dermatologists to deliver more responsible, ethical, and holistic patient care.
