Functional medicine in aesthetic laser treatments
Objectives: Optimize the results of laser treatments in patients using functional medicine biohacks
Introduction: In recent years, the synergy between aesthetic medicine and functional medicine has opened exciting new possibilities for enhancing patient outcomes. One particularly promising area is the use of functional medicine biohacks to optimize the results of laser treatments. While laser therapies target the skin and deeper tissues with precision and efficacy, their full potential can be amplified when the body’s internal environment is optimized. By addressing inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, oxidative stress, and hormonal imbalances through personalized biohacks—such as nutraceuticals, detox pr
Materials / method: A narrative integrative review with a clinical approach was conducted to explore functional medicine strategies aimed at enhancing the outcomes of aesthetic laser treatments. A comprehensive literature search was performed using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, focusing on publications from 2013 to 2024. Keywords and MeSH terms included: “functional medicine,” “biohacking,” “laser therapy,” “skin rejuvenation,” “mitochondrial support,” “antioxidants,” “nutraceuticals,” and “aesthetic outcomes.”
The inclusion criteria covered original research articles, systematic reviews,
Results: Improved tissue regeneration and collagen production in patients with optimized antioxidant levels, vitamin D status, and mitochondrial function.
Reduced post-laser inflammation and less persistent erythema in patients following antioxidant protocols (glutathione, liposomal vitamin C, omega-3).
Higher patient satisfaction and improved perceived aesthetic results (measured using GAIS and VAS scales) among those who incorporated biohacks such as intermittent fasting, sleep optimization, and targeted supplementation.
The gut-skin axis showed clinical relevance: patients with untreated intestin
Conclusion: Integrating functional medicine into aesthetic laser treatments enhances tissue recovery, reduces inflammation, and improves overall outcomes. Supporting mitochondrial function, reducing oxidative stress, and addressing gut and hormonal imbalances create an optimal internal environment for skin regeneration. This holistic approach increases patient satisfaction and promotes longer-lasting results, redefining aesthetic care as both internal and external healing.
