Dysbiosis in aesthetic medicine: should we treat it with aesthetic protocols?
Objectives: To emphasize that aesthetic medicine must evaluate the patient’s overall health and wellbeing as part of daily injectable practice. To highlight the importance of detecting patients with gut–skin axis disruption through functional questionnaires and simple laboratory tests. To propose strategies that integrate this detection into aesthetic consultation, reducing adverse events and accelerating recovery when performing hyaluronic acid fillers, botulinum toxin, and regenerative injectable procedures.
Introduction: Injectable procedures are central to aesthetic practice, but outcomes depend not only on technique and product choice, but also on the patient’s systemic health. Dysbiosis alters inflammatory pathways, healing, and skin resilience, increasing the risk of adverse events. A structured approach that integrates screening for gut–skin imbalance offers aesthetic physicians a way to improve safety and enhance the effectiveness of fillers, botulinum toxin, and regenerative protocols.
Materials / method: We conducted a literature review (2016–2025) and applied clinical experience from our aesthetic clinic. Patients were assessed with functional questionnaires (digestive health, diet, stress) and simple analytics (CRP, vitamin D, zinc, homocysteine). We present six clinical cases of patients with a history of hyaluronic acid injections and minor adverse reactions (edema, nodules, delayed erythema). Before a new injectable procedure, dysbiosis was addressed with regenerative strategies (nutraceuticals, probiotics, polynucleotides, exosomes). Aesthetic treatments included hyaluronic acid fillers,
Results: Patients with dysbiosis who underwent injectable treatments supported by regenerative protocols showed reduced edema, faster tissue recovery, and improved durability of results. Adverse events such as nodules, delayed edema, or inflammatory reactions were less frequent. Clinical cases in periorbital rejuvenation, lip feminization, and upper-third contouring demonstrated higher satisfaction and more coherent outcomes when dysbiosis was addressed alongside aesthetic procedures.
Conclusion: In aesthetic medicine, injectables should be framed within a broader evaluation of patient health. By detecting dysbiosis through questionnaires and simple analytics, and applying combined regenerative–aesthetic strategies, we can reduce adverse events and accelerate recovery. This integrative approach redefines injectables: not only to correct or beautify, but to optimize outcomes by restoring systemic balance in every patient.
