Ethnic considerations regarding fillers
Objectives: This presentation focuses on the specific nature of aging in dark and mestizos’ skin and its medical treatment using fillers.
Introduction: Dark skin is often thicker than white skin, and facial aging has its own specific characteristics. In Black and mestizos’ patients, medical indications for filler injections must respect racial and ethnic anatomical characteristics as well as beauty criteria.
Materials / method: A series of black Africans, Brazilians, Asians, Caribbean mestizos and Caucasians is presented.
We describe the specifics of their skin aging and their most frequent requests
Results: Signs of facial aging appear later than in white skin.
Thicker skin, deeper furrows, or wrinkles encourage the choice of high G prime dermal fillers. Volume restoration generally requires more product.
High G prime hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite, or polycaprolactone may be a good choice for nasolabial folds. Polylactic acid can be used to enhance the cheek area.
The number of botulinum toxin units is often higher in forehead area.
Afro-Caribbean, African, Asian, Hispanic, or mixed-race anthropometric beauty standards must, of course, be respected.
Conclusion: Wrinkles appear later but are deeper in dark-skinned patients. Their needs are not the same as those of Caucasian patients. It is therefore advisable to favor high G prime and more volumizing products.
