Beyond volumization: tailoring bioremodelling injectables for skin quality in skin of color
Objectives: 1. Differentiate between polynucleotides (PN), hyaluronic acid (HA) hybrids, and poly-DL-lactic acid (PDLLA) in terms of mechanism and clinical applications for skin quality.
2. Design tailored treatment plans for skin of color using bioremodelling injectables safely and effectively.
3. Integrate injectables with other modalities to optimize outcomes while minimizing complications.
Introduction: As aesthetic goals evolve beyond volumization, skin quality has become a central focus of modern rejuvenation. In skin of color, this shift demands a nuanced understanding of product biology and ethnic skin physiology to achieve meaningful improvement while minimizing pigmentary risk.
Materials / method: This presentation examines the use of three classes of bioremodelling injectables—PN, HA hybrids, and PDLLA—in Asian patients with concerns such as texture irregularities, enlarged pores, dullness, and early laxity. Clinical protocols were analyzed, emphasizing distinctions in mechanism of action (hydration vs. regeneration vs. collagen stimulation), injection depth, treatment intervals, and patient selection. Strategies for combining injectables with energy-based devices such as RF microneedling and non-ablative lasers were also reviewed to demonstrate synergistic benefits.
Results: Across patient series, the tailored use of bioremodelling injectables led to visible improvements in overall skin radiance, elasticity, and texture with minimal downtime. Sequential and combinatory use of PN, HA hybrids, and PDLLA showed enhanced outcomes compared with single-agent protocols. Patients reported high satisfaction, particularly with protocols emphasizing gradual, natural-looking rejuvenation suitable for Fitzpatrick IV–V skin types.
Conclusion: Understanding the biological and clinical distinctions among PN, HA hybrids, and PDLLA enables practitioners to move beyond volumization toward precision bioarchitecture—layered, personalized treatment strategies that target skin quality at multiple levels. Mastering these techniques provides a clear clinical advantage: improved outcomes, reduced complications, and alignment with the evolving aesthetic goals of skin-of-color patients seeking natural, radiant results.
