Objectives: We designed a randomized double-blind controlled study to assess the effects of Growth Factors contained in ASC-Exosomes added to conventional AGA treatment.
Introduction: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been used as a Growth Factors (GF) source in Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA). New sources of GF contained in stem cell-derived exosomes, and their role in AGA is still to be determined.
Materials / method: Methods:
80 male patients were diagnosed with AGA and received standard treatment with a daily intake of 5 mg Oral Minoxidil (OM), 0.5 mg Oral Dutasteride (OD), and 299 mg oral Saw Palmetto (SP). 40 were then randomly assigned to the ASC-Exosome group (EXO) and received additionally 6 sessions of scalp infiltrations per month with exosomes containing GF. The other 40 were randomly assigned to the Control group (sham or C) and received instead 6 sessions of saline solution infiltrations. Macroscopic pictures were taken at baseline and 12 months after treatment. Through trichoscopy pictures,
Results: All patients finished the treatment. At the 6 and 12 months evaluation, hair density in group C had overall increased by 14.4% and 16.7%, whereas patients in the EXO group had a hair density increase of 22.6% and 25.4% respectively. Terminal hairs increased 18% and 25% at 6 and 12 months respectively in the Control group and 27% and 36% respectively in the ASC-Exosome group.
Conclusion: Growth Factors and other Bioactive ingredients contained in ASC-Exosomes increase the density of hair in AGA with safety and should be considered as an adjuvant to conventional therapy with OD, OM, and SP in AGA.
