Objectives: To describe the science behind the combination of high intensity focused electromagnetic energy and radiofrequency for the purpose of enhancing muscle growth and reducing subcutaneous fat noninvasively. Participants will understand the technology, the mechanism of action, indications and contraindications, and the results of multiple prospective studies on the scientific background as well as clinical outcomes of the device.
Introduction: In 2018, HIFEM (high intensity focused electromagnetic energy) was introduced as a method to decrease subcutaneous fat and generate muscle hypertrophy. 19% mean fat reduction and 15% muscle hypertrophy was noted in studies using MRI and ultrasound measurements. In 2020, a new device combining radiofrequency with HIFEM was introduced. The combination of energy, previously thought to be impossible, was tested extensively prior to release. New study data noted a mean 30% reduction in subcutaneous fat, 25% muscle hypertrophy, and 19% reduction in diastasis recti.
Materials / method: The updated combination HIFEM device was used in eleven studies: histology, scanning electron micrograph study, a porcine model looking at myosatellite cell production, and multiple clinical studies using objective measurements of fat reduction, muscle hypertrophy, and diastasis reduction.
Results: The results note that permanent fat loss is achieved through a noninflammatory process that lyses adipocyte cell membranes. SEM showed fat cell death over time. Prospective studies showed a mean fat reduction of 30% (19%) with th previous device, muscle hypertrophy of 25% (15% with the original model) and diastasis reduction of 19% (11% with the previous HIFEM alone).
Conclusion: The combination of HIFEM plus radiofrequency can deliver energy safely for the noninvasive reduction of fat and hypertrophy of muscle in the abdomen, thighs, arms, and buttock region.
