Objectives: We would like to give some ideas and tips to get functionally and aesthetically adequate results of local flaps after tumor resection of the face
Introduction: It’s always a challenge to restore the aesthetic harmony beside the reconstruction of form and function in reconstructive surgery of the face. In order to have the best aesthetic and functional result we will describe aesthetic guidelines which are illustrated by clinical cases.
Materials / method: Tumor resection in the facial area demands the knowledge of anatomical sub units
: upper and lower eyelid area, temporal and frontal area, nose, ear, upper and lower lip area, jaw, scalp. Aesthetic unit, function, motility, and specific technical points for each type of flap or skin graft are presented. Advantages and disadvantages of each flap used in each specific aesthetic unit is discussed.
Results: For each area, transposition, advancement or rotation flaps are presented. Some technical details, tricks and techniques to improve result and decrease complication rate, are presented for each flap. More than 800 local flaps have been included in this retrospective study.
Conclusion: Respecting aesthetic sub units and tension lines of the face helps to get functionally and aesthetically satisfying results of local flaps after tumor resection of the face
