Objectives: To update the use of phototherapy "at the age of biologics" for vitiligo
Introduction: Phototherapy was introduced in the treatment of vitiligo patients more than 100 years ago.
Forty years ago the development of narrow-band UVB (NB-UVB) fluorescent tubes was a major step forward.
The clinical availability of new drug treatments open the possibility of very effective treatment combinations
Materials / method: We have reviewed the clinical results on the treatment of vitiligo of:
NB-UVB alone
NB-UVB combined with topical calcineurin inhibitors
NB-UVB combined with topical JAK inhibitors
NB-UVB combined with oral JAK inhibitors
NB-UVB combined with subcutaneous implants of afamelanotide
NB-UVB combined with oral and topical anti oxidants
Results: The combination with NB-UVB improves the treatment outcome of topical calcineurin inhibitors, topical JAK inhibitors, oral JAK inhibitors, subcutaneous implants of afamelanotide and oral and topical anti oxidants
Conclusion: NB-UVB remains a cheap, effective and safe treatment for vitiligo and its combination with new drug treatments can be still more positive with an enhancement of efficacy and a substantial decrease of costs
