Objectives: By understanding the changes after insertion of the PDO thread into the tissue, we can understand the theory of the thread lifting.
and It is possible to infer how different types of thread can make give lifting effects.
Introduction: Clinicians know empirically that absorbable thread insertion makes some positive result to human face.
it is not well known what principles lead to such a positive change.
In particular, experiments using small animals were difficult to observe precise changes because tissue structures are different from human.
Experiments were carried out using PIG, which is the most similar to human, and time-dependent changes were further observed through 1-year observation.
Materials / method: four White Yucatan Pigs were selected for study of histologic changes after the insertion of the absorbable threads.
we inserted mono-thread and cog thread to the pig.
and we checked histologic changes at 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 24 weeks, 12months.
Results: tissues change results are summarized 5 categories
1. newly developed fibrous connective tissue
2. Merging with existing fibrous connective tissue
3. Tissue contraction by myofibroblast activity
4. increased capillary vessel size
5. reduced fat layer thickness by fat cell denaturation
Conclusion: The injection of PDO into tissues causes specific changes in the surrounding tissues in addition to the physical effect. theses changes can be organized into 5 categories. the result of this study can explain all the positive changes that have been reported in previous clinical research studies.
