Objectives: To present the long term effectiveness of fat grafting of the hands for rejuvenation
Introduction: The loss of subcutaneous fat of the hands as we age can lead to more prominent veins, bones and tendons. Fat grafting is an effective way to address this volume loss and restore a more youthful appearance.
Materials / method: Ten patients were recruited to receive fat transfer to the hands. Autologous fat was harvested from the abdomen. The Coleman technique, involving retrograde injection, multiple cannula passes and microfat deposition, was used to deliver the fat. Primary outcome measures were patient and physician evaluation of volume retention and overall improvement . Secondary outcome measures were complications.
Results: Results showed satisfactory to good outcomes at 6, 12 and 18 months , and up to 36 months in some patients. Adverse events included postoperative pain, edema and bruising.
Conclusion: Fat grafting is a safe and effective long lasting way to restore volume to the aging hands and improve their appearance
