Objectives: IPL can improve the appearance of keloid, hypertrophic and macular scars by reducing their size, thickness and redness. Multiple sessions may be necessary. IPL is a safe and well-tolerated treatment, and it could be combined with other treatment modalities like intra-lesional steroids.
Introduction: Scarring can be a distressing experience for patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment for Chinese patients with macular, hypertrophic, and keloid scars. By examining the effectiveness of this treatment approach, we hope to provide patients with a safe and effective option to scar treatment.
Materials / method: This study evaluated IPL treatment for 6 patients with macular, hypertrophic, and keloid scars on different body areas. IPL treatment included cutoff filters of 515-755nm, pulse durations of 3-6ms, pulse delay of 10-40ms, fluence of 10-22 J/cm2, double and triple pulses, and 10-18 treatment sessions. The treatments were performed tri-weekly until patients were satisfied with the cosmetic results, with no adjuvant therapy given. Clinical photos were taken before each treatment, with patient satisfaction rates and side effects monitored.
Results: In all 6 patients, there was a significant clinical improvement in hyperpigmentation, thickness, hardness, and redness of the scars, with an overall improvement rate of 100%. Excellent improvement was observed in five patients (83%), while the remaining patient showed good improvement. The effects of IPL treatments were long-lasting, and all patients reported high levels of satisfaction with the treatment outcomes
Conclusion: Our study suggests that Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is an effective treatment option for improving the erythema, hardness, thickness, and appearance of scars resulting from a variety of causes. The results of the treatment were observed to be long-lasting, indicating the potential of IPL therapy as a promising approach for managing scars.
