Objectives: Be familiar with different measures to optimize wound haeling after cutaneous surgery
Introduction: The result of any surgical procedure is influenced by the postoperative wound care we utilise. The goal is to achieve scarring which is functionally not disturbing for the patient, causes no symptoms and is as inconspicuous as possible.
Materials / method: Review of Literature and presentation of own cases
Results: One important factor for achieving such scars is to keep the inflammatory phase of wound healing as short as possible. Other important factors are to reduce tension on the scars, to keep them well hydrated and to protect them from UV radiation. In the case of wounds that heal by secondary intention, fastest healing with the least disturbing and functionally healthy scars can be facilitated by reducing bacterial burden and inflammation in the wound, keeping it well moist and in some instances using advanced wound healing products such as matrices and tissue-engineered skin substitutes.
Conclusion: The measures described will allow for optimal surgical results
