Objectives: To review causes of facial hyperpigmentation other than melasma in dark skinned persons.
Introduction: Melasma is a common pigmentory disorder of face, particularly in dark skin females. Several other less common diseases can also induce facial hyperpigmentation on the face in dark skin persons.
Materials / method: They include Riehl melanosis (pigmented cosmetic dermatitis), poikiloderma of Civatte (erythromelanosis interfollicularis), erythromelanosis follicularis faciei et colli, peribuccal pigmentation of Brocq, Berloque dermatitis, erythema dyschromicum perstans, lichen planus pigmentosus, and drug‐induced hyperpigmentation.
Results: A brief description of clinical features, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of these entities will be presented.
Conclusion: Several less common causes of facial hyperpigmentation should be considered in the differential diagnosis of melasma.
